MARK HARBORTH's Storyboards

I think we can all agree that storyboards serve as an invaluable pre-visualization tool, offering a multitude of benefits. But what if we could expand those benefits? What if storyboards could be 3-dimensional instead of 2-dimensional. What if you could virtually walk through all of your locations before you start shooting? What if, while taking that walk thru, the Director and the DP could actually check out shots and virtually make the film before even stepping on location. What if each board also had its own separate ground plan showing camera location, camera angles, height, lighting position and instrumentation? Think of the time that could be saved. Think of the money that could be saved. Thanks to Innoventive Software's FrameForge, my storyboards can provide those extra benefits along with that virtual walk thru, and those meticulously plotted ground plans.

What sets my storyboards apart is their comprehensive nature - even specifying the type and brand of camera used on the project. They go beyond mere conceptualizations by providing a visual representation that resembles what the camera will capture. This level of precision ensures a clearer understanding of the intended visual composition.

Utilizing a 3D modeling technique, scouted locations can be meticulously constructed, resulting in an accurate and scaled representation of the actual site. This enables the Director and Director of Photography (D.P.) to strategically plan and frame their shots from the camera's point of view, while proactively addressing any challenges that may arise prior to physically entering the authentic setting. Consequently, working within a virtual replica of the location provides a valuable tool for seamless pre-production preparation.

Utilizing the virtual world for camera shots, set-ups, and pre-planning accelerates the on-site schedule significantly. This approach allows for testing changes or brainstorming ideas directly on the virtual set, facilitating prompt revisions without the need for extensive resketching.

As an added advantage, storyboard shots can be transformed into animatics or slideshows, creating a virtual representation of the film through basic animation. This remarkable capability is achievable even before the commencement of the actual shooting, providing valuable insights and enhancing the overall visualization process.
